Welcome

Our club is made up of a friendly group of bowlers. We're always keen to welcome new members, whatever age or skill. You don't have to live in St Ives. Coaching and kit are available, so you can easily give bowls a try. If you're looking for a new interest with a strong social element, look no further.

The Club has over 150 events, friendly, league and county matches during each outdoor season. There are friendly social triples games every Tuesday and Friday from 2.00pm. Members can play for one of the club's teams and enter competitions run throughout the season. During the closed season we have teams playing indoor bowls and arrange social events.

Open Day

Want to give bowls a try? Come to our Open Day on Bank Holiday Sunday, 1 May. You'll spend a pleasant, sociable afternoon learning about the gentle game of bowls. We'll even throw in tea and biscuits at half time. Plus the chance to win some gardening vouchers in a fun competition at the end.

To book your place, email stivesbowlsclub@gmail.com and give us your name, the name of anyone else you're bringing along, and a 'phone number. No previous experience is necessary. Just bring a pair of flat-soled shoes to change in to before playing.

Arrive by 1.45pm and we'll start at 2.00pm. Don't worry if you'll arrive a bit later. Let us know in the email.

We'll play bowls for about an hour, then pop into the clubhouse for tea and biscuits. Then another hour of bowls before the finale, a spider competition. What's that? Come and find out. There's a chance to win those vouchers in 30 seconds.

HBF & HWBF Finals Day Report

It was hot, and humid at Ramsey on Sunday. Looking at the results there were some very close games, every game looks to have been well fought and we'd expect no other.

The early session opened with the Mixed Rinks final between: Kevin & James Bowers & Karen Leader (all Sawtry) 22 Andy & Sandra Jakes & Ian Swannell (all Somersham) 14

The late morning session started as before for our ladies president :( in the Ladies champion of champion singles. Patsy Coles (Ramsey) 18 Nicky Hastings (Hemingford) 21

Ladies Pairs saw Chloe Brett & Rebecca Moorbey (Brampton) win 19 - 9 over Karen Martin & Emma Gardiner (Sawtry)

Ladies Secretary singles had Gill Willis (Ramsey) losing out 19 -22 to Sabrina Parnell (Brampton)

Mens 2 Bowl singles Richard Fisher lost out to fellow Papworth player Harry Ward 19-21

In the mixed pairs a really close game, Buckden mother & son duo Juliet and Mac May just missed out 15-16 to Kevin Bowers & Karen Leader (Sawtry)

The ladies 2 bowl singles champion was a familiar name, Janet Chapman of Hemingford beat Jane Baldwin (St Ives) 21-16

The afternoon session started with the mens 2 bowl rinks final The Brampton trio of Ed Elmore sub Nicky Brett & Tom Swannell saw off Sawtry trio Toby Furzeland & Sam & Matt Nickerson 24-14

Mens Senior pairs was also a close game coming into the last end Needingworth Duo Peter Hutchinson & Graham Purse were 2 shots ahead but dropped a three on the last end to lose the final by one shot to Houghton & Wyton duo Andy Foad & Dave Benefield 16-17.

Mens Senior singles saw another regular winner Albie Corn (Buckden) put away Dave Peak (Hemingford) 21-9

The Senior mixed pairs result warmed my heart. Richard had said on Thursday that he'd love to win this and get to Skegness together in their Presidential year. And guess what?? They did it. Richard & Patsy Coles (Ramsey) 21 Gordon Phillips & Jane Baldwin (St Ives) 17

The Mens Pairs another really close game, Richard Wilson & Owen Kennedy (St Ives) 17 Joe Randall & Ross Martin (Brampton) 19

Mens Champion of Champions singles Eric Baker (technically still national 2 bowl champion) of Papworth beat David Woolford (St Ives) 21-11

The afternoon session came around as the temperature hit its highest levels. The Mens Under 25 Singles final Sam Brugnoli (Huntingdon) made up for his disappointment in the Mens 4 bowl and beat Mac May (Buckden) 21-4

The mens 3 bowl final saw Papworth trio Eric Baker, Richard Fisher & Colin Bates beat St Ives trio Ian Cousins, Owen Darlington & Robert Jepson 17-13

Ladies 3 bowl rinks The Brampton trio Chloe Brett, Rebecca Moorbey & Sabrina Parnell won 21-16 against Huntingdon trio Nicky Verlander, Karen Brugnoli & Jean Whittamore

The Mens Secretary singles had Trevor Dighton (St Ives) up against Ken Martin (Hemingford) another close game that Ken won 21-19 

In the Ladies Senior pairs Ramsey duo Patsy Coles & Linda Levi took on Janet Chapman and Barbara Clutterbuck from Hemingford, the Hemingford duo won out 17-15

The last session of a long day for all the competitors and organisers saw the Ladies 2 bowl rinks where Brampton trio Chloe Brett, Rebecca Moorbey & Sabrina Parnell took on Hemingford team of Pat Brace, Jenny Martin & Teresa Bicarregui, the Brampton ladies coming out on top 18-13

The ladies senior singles was Patsy Coles (Ramsey) fifth final of the day she was up against Janet Chapman (Hemingford) who was in her third final and looking for a hat trick of wins. But it wasn't to be and Patsy prevailed 21-15 to make it her 2nd win of the day.

Well done to everyone concerned, it takes a lot of work to organise and run these events and our team of people make it look so easy. Well done to Ramsey for their hosting of the finals. And thanks to our umpires who keep it all in line.

Besides the current top players, a good number of past members are remembered with reverence for their skill. How do they compare? Book a rink

Until Coronavirus restrictions are fully lifted, use of St Ives Bowls Club green is subject to conditions. To use the green you must pre-book a rink using the online booking system.

BOOK A RINK

Booking conditions

Effective from 8 June, St Ives Bowls Club will open with several restrictions. These restrictions are based on guidance received from Bowls England and in line with latest Government advice.

Clubhouse and building facilities

• The clubhouse will be closed, including all changing rooms, bar and kitchen, and is not open for ANY access. No drinks will be available from the club.
• Limited access will be made available to use the toilets (see personal care section) with paper towels and hand sanitisers to be used at all times. Hand sanitisers must be used before entering the building.
• The disabled toilet will not be open as it forms part of the clubhouse.
• Rubbish bins will only be available for the disposal of paper towels and single-use gloves. If you bring water or food you must remove all rubbish when you leave.
• You must clean door handles and toilet seats where applicable.
• All mats and jacks will be placed outside in a wheelbarrow ready for use. Do not enter the equipment shed or touch the key. The greenkeeper will take care of the equipment after the last session.

Playing format

• Only five rinks will be available for booking. No other rinks may be used.
• You can play as an individual, singles or pairs. No triples are allowed at present.
• All playing slots must be booked in advance. An online booking system is available using the 'Book a rink' button on the top right hand of the Club's website or by calling Dina Barlow at 01480 455926 who will book for you. You will receive a separate email advising steps for booking online.
• You cannot turn up on the day unless you have booked via either of the above methods.
• Sessions available for booking will be based on three per day at 10.30am, 2.00pm and 5.30pm.
• Do not enter the Club grounds until your approved play time and leave the Club as soon as possible after playing.
• Your booking slot will allow you time to clean mats and jacks and vacate the premises before the next group play.
• If after booking a slot you are unable to attend please cancel your booking using the online system or contact Dina Barlow so the slot can be freed up for another member.

Equipment

To minimise the risk of infection only essential items will be used. Mats and jacks must be cleaned after each session. Use the outside tap or hose which will be available.

• Bowls must be your own. You cannot borrow any from the Club.
• Rink markers, as agreed with the greenkeeper.

Non-essential equipment

• Scoreboards or scorecards will not be used.
• Bowls pushers or jack settlers will not be used.
• Two-metre distance sticks and chalk will not be used.

Personal Care

• Clean everything you touch, including door handles, locks and toilet seats. Do not assume previous visitors have cleaned everything.
• Take care not to touch other members' bowls with your hands.
• Should you show any symptoms of COVID or colds please do not attend the Club.
• Dress appropriately before arriving as changing rooms will be closed. Toilets must not be used to change clothes.
• Do not shake hands.
• Hand sanitisers, paper towels and single-use gloves will be provided in toilets.
• Bins in toilets are for paper towels and single-use gloves only.
• Access to toilets is on a one by one basis.

Club fees

As playing this season is restricted, your committee has agreed no membership fee will be collected for the 2020/21 season. This will apply to existing members only (full and social). Your membership will be carried to next season.

New members playing this year will pay 50% of our annual fee, being £32.

Should any member wish to give a donation towards the running costs of the Club that would be most welcome. While recognising outgoings have dropped, some costs such as electricity, water rates, insurance and machine maintenance still have to be paid.

Donations will be treated as confidential and only known to the Treasurer. Please contact Pat Cook directly should you wish to make a donation. 

Finally, while under these restrictions we appreciate your help in maintaining them for your safety and the safety of others. It is vital we follow guidelines from Bowls England in both social distancing and hygiene to ensure our insurance cover is valid. If the committee receives further guidelines on easing any restrictions they will advise you immediately.

How to book a rink

You will receive an email inviting you to register with the online booking system. Once you've registered you'll be able to view existing bookings and make your own booking.

For all subsequent bookings click the 'Book a rink' button in the top right hand corner of the Club's website.

You'll be able to view existing bookings. To make a booking you'll need to log in by clicking 'LOG IN' in the bottom left-hand corner of the online booking system. You'll be asked to enter your email address and set a password. If you click 'Remember me' you'll only have do this once.

The booking calendar shows any existing bookings for today. Use the left & right arrows above the heading 'Rink 1' to move to other days.

There are three booking slots for each of five rinks, a total of fifteen to choose from. Starting times are 10:30, 14:00 and 17:30.

Hover your cursor over a rink. Available slots are displayed as green blocks. Click a block and then click the green 'Book' button at the top of the screen. A box 'New Booking' is displayed. Scroll down and click the green button 'Confirm booking'.

You'll receive an email confirming the booking. If you need to cancel the booking click the 'Book a rink' button, move to the day of your booking, click the down arrow in your booking block and click 'Cancel your booking'.

Don't forget to log out of the booking system by clicking the icon in the bottom left-hand corner and clicking 'Log out'.

Opening Day - Sunday 5 April 2020

Can you name a sport where all ages can play on equal terms? How about bowls? Not only a real family affair, it's great fun for friends too. Whenever you start to play, bowls will keep you active longer than any other sport. Whatever level you play, whether socially, for one of our league teams, in Club competitions or competing at County and National level, there's the same level of courtesy and friendliness throughout.

St Ives Bowls Club is friendly and thriving with a green that's won a national award. We've got vacancies for new members. With Opening Day on Sunday 5 April and free coaching on Sunday mornings during April and May, there's no better time to give it a try.

Stocker Cup

The Stocker Cup is an inter club knockout competition run by St Ives Bowls Club. The cup was donated to the Club by Jack Stocker, a member for almost 30 years, President in 1951 and 1967 and Men's Singles Champion in 1933 and 1934. When he retired as licensee of the Greyhound pub in 1965, Jack was the longest serving publican in St Ives. There are several photos of him in the Photo Album.
